Doiini No.4 @ PhotoCafe, Hamamatsu

Hello thar.

Been over a year since I last posted but since people apparently read this stuff I've decided to make more of an effort to post. I'd like to let you know about an event I, my, me, myself am organising in the town where I live, Hamamatsu.

"doiini" is an event I have run for just over a year. The word "doiini" is particular to this area and means "This is great!!". I decided the name at a small meeting with members of the first event. I wanted a word to express the fact that this is a local event, by locals for locals at the same time as being catchy.
When people pick up the flyers, some people don't realise the meaning straight away, but when they get it they laugh out loud. Probably because it's local dialect coupled with the fact I'm not even from Japan, let alone the local area, along with the assertive cockiness of the phrase.
I'm glad it gets people's attention, and people remember it.

I was first invited by the owners of PhotoCafe, a cafe with a photo studio and photo exhibitions, to do a craft fair with some of my friends. I often spun yarn at the place, and had built a friendly relationship with the two men who ran the place so negotiations regarding it ran smoothly.

The concept for "doiini" is to give local artists, creators and musicians a chance to show off their creations. Most of the craft fairs in the area have people coming from far afield to open shop, but I wanted to keep it strictly local, and limit participants to people living in the area from Toyohashi to Kakegawa. It's not about selling things and making money; most of the people who participate have day jobs. It's having an opportunity to meet people, show off what you do, eat good food (PhotoCafe has delicious dishes) and have fun.

Hope to see you there!
